How to Clean your Birkenstock Footbed
May 14, 2026
1. How to clean your Birkenstocks: Footbed, Straps & Soles Made Simple
Your favourite Birkenstock sandals go everywhere with you — morning walks, beach days, brunch dates and beyond. With all that love, they can start to look a little worn. The good news? Cleaning your Birkenstock footbed, straps and Birkenstock sole is simple, and doing it regularly keeps them comfortable, fresh and long-lasting.
Why It’s Important to Clean Your Birkenstock Sandals
The signature Birkenstock cork footbed shapes to your foot over time and is lined with soft suede. Because suede absorbs oils and sweat, keeping the Birkenstock insole clean helps prevent odour and staining. A little maintenance also protects the cork and extends the life of your Birkenstock shoes.
How to Clean the Birkenstock Footbed
1. Brush Away Dirt
Use a soft brush to remove dust and debris from the suede Birkenstock insole. This refreshes the nap and preps the footbed for cleaning.
2. Gently Wash the Footbed
Mix mild soap with water or use a suede shampoo and lightly dampen a cloth (never soak your sandals). Wipe the Birkenstock footbed in gentle, circular motions. For stubborn marks, a suede eraser works well.
3. Air Dry Completely
Let your sandals dry naturally in a cool, shaded area. Avoid direct heat, which can damage the Birkenstock cork footbed and the EVA sole.
4. Seal the Cork
If the cork edges appear dry, apply a cork sealer to keep your Birkenstock clogs or sandals protected. This should be done every few months based on wear.
How to Clean Birkenstock Straps
Different strap materials need different care:
- Birkenstock leather straps: Wipe clean then condition lightly.
- Birko-Flor / Synthetic straps: Clean with mild soap and water or use a plastic bristle brush.
- Suede or nubuck straps: Brush gently to restore texture.
Always test cleaners on a small area first.
How to Clean the Birkenstock Sole
Your Birkenstock EVA sole is durable but collects dirt easily.
- Mix warm water with mild detergent.
- Scrub the sole with a soft brush or cloth.
- Rinse lightly and air dry.
For deep treads on Birkenstock sandals, a toothbrush helps reach into the grooves.
Keep Your Birkenstocks Looking Their Best
Regular cleaning keeps your favourite Birkenstock sandals, clogs and slides looking new while preserving the comfort they're famous for. With just a few simple steps, you’ll keep your Birkenstock footbed, straps and soles in great shape for seasons to come.
