Natural Leather

Leather is one of the most robust natural materials used in traditional shoe manufacturing. Birkenstock natural leather is selected for its particularly high quality and thickness. Apply a good quality cream polish to remove scuff marks and a beeswax dressing to keep the leather conditioned, moisturised and supple.

Footbed Construction

A lot goes into the construction of the iconic Birkenstock footbed. Natural latex is used to bind the cork and create the contoured foundation (2), two layers of jute provide flexibility and durability (1, 3), and water based, solvent free adhesives bring it all together. Top it off with a suede or animal-free lining (4) and the result - a truly supportive footbed that follows the contours of your feet and moves with you.

Supergrip Sole

The Birkenstock Supergrip sole consists of a cushioned EVA midsole and non-slip, oil and grease rubber tread, making it ideal for use in medical or hospitality settings. The Supergrip sole is available in select Birkenstock styles including the Kay, Tokio, Boston models with 'supergrip' in their title or description.

Pappillios and Birkis don't discriminate - they love feet small and large, wide and narrow, and everything in between. Like Birkenstocks, the adjustable straps allow you to customise the fit with ease, and most styles are available in both Regular (R) and Narrow (N) fittings.

However, they are a slightly wider than Birkenstocks, in that a Regular Papillio is wider than a Regular Birkenstock, and a Narrow Papillio is in between a Narrow and a Regular Birkenstock.

If you already own a pair or are trying them on in store - check out the little foot emoji on the footbed of the shoe (between the arch and heel) or on the shoe box. If the foot is coloured in, it is a Narrow (N). If it is just an outline of a foot, it is a Regular (R).
