Clog dancing started in England and Wales in the fifteenth century and was commonly used to cure earthen floors in newly-constructed buildings. Later synonymous with the industrial revolution, you could argue that clog dancing was the first form of street dance, so synonymous was it with urban life at the dawn of the mechanical age.
Still a popular form of folk dance, clog dancing in still practiced across the world from Appalachian Bluegrass cloggers to Peruvian zapateo dancers. Hugely popular in the USA, with regular competitive events, clog dancing is also enjoying a revival in the north of England and even right here in Australia.
It’s not hard to see why. There’s an inherent joy to the sound of wooden soles moving in rhythm, and there are so many great clogs available, it’s tempting to do a little jig every time you try a pair on.
For many, the classic clog is a Birkenstock. Their Birkis range has an incredibly cute pair based on that German design classic, the VW camper van. In an on-trend grey colour scheme, they artfully combine retro funkiness with urban coolness in a way that’s totally compatible with clog-dancing. Although the soft foot bed won’t make much noise, these gorgeous clogs would be perfect for dancing the night away, and they provide great support.
The original Birkenstock clogs are hard to beat for serious movers. They have updated their colour choice in recent years and our current favourite has to be their gorgeous Boston clogs in smooth, supple blue leather. Also available in classic black, once worn in and the cork protected, these beautifully engineered beauties could last a lifetime of floor pounding.
Dansko clogs have a perfect rounded toe box, much roomier than many other styles, and offer great arch support. Their slight heel and covered back provides protection and coverage and makes this range a go-anywhere clog that is suitable for all kinds of weather.
The special anti-fatigue bottom keeps Dansko clogs comfortable all day and all night. If you prefer something more daring than basic black, you could ring the changes with a sling-back or go for one of their new styles in blue and neutrals.
Float Like A Butterfly
Papillio, the trend-driven range from Birkenstocks, features gorgeous floral designs and funky patterns. Their version of the Birkenstock classic Boston has a beautiful orchid embossed in the leather and comes in a pale grey colour with a shiny copper buckle. The contoured foot bed helps to distribute your weight evenly through the whole foot and makes this clog a cut above the rest in terms of comfort and style.
For something more wintry and subtle, it’s hard to beat their Frankfurt style in a baroque-inspired print. With cute cut outs and a subtle layer of latex under the cork foot bed, these are beautifully designed and transport you from the office to the dance floor.
